World Blood Donor Day Activity:
World Blood Donor Day is celebrated all over the world on June 14th to say thank you to all the voluntary and unpaid blood donors for their donation.
It is also used to raise awareness of the importance of donating blood, and how many lives giving blood saves daily.
World Blood Donor Day also marks the invaluable asset of having affordable and timely supplies of clean and safe blood for universal health.
One of eight global public health campaigns acknowledged by The World Health Organisation, this celebration offers guidance on how to give blood, and what members of the public can do to help.
A different campaign is promoted by the organisers each year to raise awareness of a different concern or issue relating to blood. In 2019, the theme was 'Safe Blood for All', highlighting the universal need for safe blood for medical treatments.
Events are also held in certain countries, who are designated as hosts. Last year's host was Rwanda.

I challenge Miss Ibinson to a headdress competition and you can all be the judges of which one is best! We'd love to see photos of you with your headdresses and we'll carefully select the most biggest and flamboyant one and select a winner. Start creating Year 5!
Thursday 30th April 2020
Good morning Year 5! It was absolutely lovely to get to speak to some of you on the phone yesterday! A few of you mentioned that you had either finished your school reading book a while ago or were a bit tired of it; it honestly doesn't matter what you read at the moment. Find something you enjoy and spend some time just getting lost in a book. If you are struggling for ideas, have a look on Books For Topics, they have some great suggestions https://www.booksfortopics.com/year-5
Maths: Today's maths is subtracting decimals with a different number of decimal places. Remember to keep your columns lined up perfectly!
https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/
English: I thought it might be nice to write about someone a little different. Have a look at the PowerPoint below all about Stan Lee. For those of you who don't know who Stan Lee is, he is the creator of the Marvel comics. He came up with characters such as Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Incredible Hulk and Captain Marvel. Have a read through the PowerPoint all about his life then create a fact file about him. You could write it out by hand or create it on the computer.
Did you know Stan Lee always had a cameo in the Marvel films and even has some filmed to use in the future now he is dead?
Make sure you send in the pictures of anything you make!
Art - Manga! Have a look at the tutorial in the link below which shows you how to draw Japanese Manga style faces. They make great cartoons and are lots of fun to draw.

Monday 27th April 2020
Happy Monday everyone! What a beautiful day to wake up to! Today, we would like to ask if you could do one act of kindness that will make someone you love smile, for example: give them a hug, offer to do a chore or make them something for their dinner. "No act of kindness no matter how small is ever wasted."
Maths: Today in Maths, we are looking at adding decimals with the same number of decimal places; this is to follow on from what you learnt last week. Click on the link below and complete the activity sheet.
https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/
English: In English, watch the short animated video 'Taking Flight'. We've been working on writing stories from different character's perspective, so you could retell this narrative from Tony's/Grandpa's point of view; describe one of the adventures in detail. Start with the line, "I was travelling in the Radio Flyer; when....." or continue the narrative and add your own adventure.
Guided Reading: We have attached a poem 'The Listeners' for you to read today. Identify words that you don't know the meaning of and use a thesaurus or Google to help you find the meanings.
Friday 24th April 2020
Happy Friday everyone! It seems we are in store for a beautiful weekend as well which is always lovely. Make sure you e-mail in the pictures of you enjoying the sun.

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/
English: In English, try the activity below to refresh your memory around using brackets to indicate parenthesis.
Creative Curriculum: If you haven't already, complete the first activity on who the Mayans were. If you've done that, check out this link with some more excellent information about the Mayan civilisation.
Thursday 23rd April 2020
We hope you have enjoyed looking at the first lesson on the Mayans; if you haven't had a go at it yet, scroll down to find the link.
Maths: today's Maths lesson is all about adding decimals which equal more than one. Remember to have a look at the BBC website too as they have lots of useful resources to help you.
https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/
English: Why not try writing a character description today? From your favourite book or one we have read in class. Remember to use lots of interesting vocabulary including figurative language, fronted adverbials and, of course, adjectives!
There is a resource bank for you to download to give you some ideas as to how to set this out.
PHSE: We have attached the first in a series of lessons about what it means to be British. At the moment, it's fantastic to see everyone pulling together during this time and it's certainly something to be proud of.

Stay safe!

Welcome back Year 5!
We hope you have had a lovely Easter break and done lots of fun things in this lovely weather. If you have a look below this post, I have added some activities for you to complete today.
Maths: I have attached the first lesson introducing you to percentages. This lesson explains the meaning of percent and begins explaining how to find it.
English: Creating tension and atmosphere. We have done quite a lot of work on this over the last few months and it's always good to practise your skills.
Creative Curriculum: Our topic this half term would have been the Mayans - one of our favourites! I have attached this week's Creative Curriculum work for you to complete explaining who the Mayans were.
2/4/20 - Dance yourself happy!
If you're anything like us, we find that dancing makes us feel so much better! With being stuck inside, it's so important to keep moving and keeping making each other smile. We've been doing lots of happy/silly dances this week to send to our friends to make them smile!
If you have been doing any dancing yourselves, why not send in a video to our email and we can share our happy dances on the Y5 page?
You never know, Miss Ibinson or Miss Errington might just pop up with a video of our own!
(PS. Miss Errington doesn't know I've nominated her for this - oops!
- Miss Ibinson)
Goodnight Mister Tom
Unfortunately, we didn't get to the end of this amazing book. I seem to have left it on the ultimate cliff hanger However, if you can get a copy of the book and finish it in your own, you definitely should! Or, here are some activities you can do linked to the parts of the book we have already read.
Make sure you send in photos of anything you do at home so I can share it on our page!
