World Blood Donor Day Activity:

What is World Blood Donor Day?

World Blood Donor Day is celebrated all over the world on June 14th to say thank you to all the voluntary and unpaid blood donors for their donation.

It is also used to raise awareness of the importance of donating blood, and how many lives giving blood saves daily.

World Blood Donor Day also marks the invaluable asset of having affordable and timely supplies of clean and safe blood for universal health.

How is World Blood Donor Day celebrated?

One of eight global public health campaigns acknowledged by The World Health Organisation, this celebration offers guidance on how to give blood, and what members of the public can do to help.

A different campaign is promoted by the organisers each year to raise awareness of a different concern or issue relating to blood. In 2019, the theme was 'Safe Blood for All', highlighting the universal need for safe blood for medical treatments.

Events are also held in certain countries, who are designated as hosts. Last year's host was Rwanda.

It has been lovely see all of the photos of you guys doing lovely things together and I hope you have at least made memories that you will carry with you forever. Remember, this won't be forever.

There are lots of lovely resources on the main page under Mental Health Awareness Week for you to complete.

English - Today's English is a little Jumpstart Grammar Game (Year 5I will be very familiar with these).

So, here's how to play, first you need to create a list of abstract nouns (these are things that you cannot see, for example; love, hate, jealousy, anger etc) then you need to create a list of places or containers (shoe box, castle, graveyard) etc. After that, create a list of adjectives. Now you're going to put them all together to create some fantastic mythical places and describe your favourite!

Here are some I came up with:

  • The unending shoe box of jealousy
  • The glittering castle of generosity
  • The curious matchbox of terror
  • The unrelenting glass of honesty

Maths: It's challenge day! See if you can complete the Friday challenge by yourself or with your family.

Art: Can you draw your magical setting from the English activity? I think I would choose to draw the match box with slime coming out of it and maybe a couple of rats! How imaginative can you be?

You could research some wartime recipes and have a go at baking one! Don't forget to email your pictures to us so we can add them on the website!

Maths - Today's White Rose maths lesson is on multiplying 4 digits by 2 digits. We have already done this in class so this is refreshing our memories. Don't forget to keep your columns organised so you don't get confused.

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/

Science - This week's Science investigation is based on forces, which we have been exploring in class. Have a go at the paper helicopter task and explore the effects of gravity and air resistance by trying to make it fall more slowly.

Monday 4th May

Well, here we are, another Monday and a fresh week. Weather forecast is looking promising too so hopefully another sunny week is in store.

English - There has been a lot of publicity regarding the upcoming VE Day. We touched on this in our topic on War and Peace, however it's always good to have a refresher ahead of the 75th anniversary on the 8th. Check out the newspaper article below and the activity pack which goes with it. If you are planning on doing anything special to celebrate VE day, please make sure you email in your photos! I know a lot of people are planning on having garden parties.

Maths - Today's White Rose maths lesson is on multiplying 2 digits using the area model. We have already done this in class so hopefully everyone will be a whizz at this. Remember, the area model can sometimes be slightly confusing so don't panic, it's just the first stepping stone to understanding the written method.

Creative Curriculum - This week's Creative Curriculum focus is on the Mayan number system. There's some fantastic activities in this one so be sure to complete them this week at some point and send in your calculations.

If you have received a voice message from us, keep your eyes peeled for a call from an unknown number - it may just be us! There is literally no escape.

It was absolutely amazing to speak to some of you last week and we will keep trying if we have missed you.

Winner of the headdress competition! Lucie Oliver

Well done Lucie!

Joining in with our DT work today.

Lucie's is definitely more imaginative!

Friday 1st May 2020

Good morning Year 5!

Maths: It's Friday! Have a go at the maths challenge on white rose and see how far you get.

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/

English: Miss Brown has added some information about an author called Luke Temple. There is a PDF of one of his books, Felix Dashwood and the Mutating Mansion. Read the text and have a go at some of the activities in the 'Writing Toolbox' PDF. This will be your task suggestion for Monday too, so don't worry about completing it all today! Why not read today and complete some of the tasks on Monday? He has included a section called 'show don't tell' which you're all really good at!

Design and Technology - Have a go at making your own Mayan headdress. The more important the person, the bigger the headdress. Make yourself important! Use card to make the basic shape and attach string to tie it on the head. You could use feathers, paint, sequins and beads to decorate.

I challenge Miss Ibinson to a headdress competition and you can all be the judges of which one is best! We'd love to see photos of you with your headdresses and we'll carefully select the most biggest and flamboyant one and select a winner. Start creating Year 5!

What we have been doing this week

Thursday 30th April 2020

Good morning Year 5! It was absolutely lovely to get to speak to some of you on the phone yesterday! A few of you mentioned that you had either finished your school reading book a while ago or were a bit tired of it; it honestly doesn't matter what you read at the moment. Find something you enjoy and spend some time just getting lost in a book. If you are struggling for ideas, have a look on Books For Topics, they have some great suggestions https://www.booksfortopics.com/year-5

Maths: Today's maths is subtracting decimals with a different number of decimal places. Remember to keep your columns lined up perfectly!

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/

English: I thought it might be nice to write about someone a little different. Have a look at the PowerPoint below all about Stan Lee. For those of you who don't know who Stan Lee is, he is the creator of the Marvel comics. He came up with characters such as Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Incredible Hulk and Captain Marvel. Have a read through the PowerPoint all about his life then create a fact file about him. You could write it out by hand or create it on the computer.

Did you know Stan Lee always had a cameo in the Marvel films and even has some filmed to use in the future now he is dead?

Make sure you send in the pictures of anything you make!

Art - Manga! Have a look at the tutorial in the link below which shows you how to draw Japanese Manga style faces. They make great cartoons and are lots of fun to draw.

Wednesday 29th April 2020

Good morning Year 5, we hope that you are all well and keeping yourselves busy. Don't forget to email us any photos of what you have been doing!

Creative Curriculum/ Geography: This week's lesson you will use the four-figure grid of the Maya civilisation to locate different cities on the map.

French: Have a look at the French section on the COVID link of the website to find work set for you s'il vous plaît.

Creative Curriculum: This week's lesson on the Mayans is all about Mayan Gods and Goddess'. This is a great lesson and something you will definitely enjoy. Why not try drawing of the Gods?

Monday 27th April 2020

Happy Monday everyone! What a beautiful day to wake up to! Today, we would like to ask if you could do one act of kindness that will make someone you love smile, for example: give them a hug, offer to do a chore or make them something for their dinner. "No act of kindness no matter how small is ever wasted."

Maths: Today in Maths, we are looking at adding decimals with the same number of decimal places; this is to follow on from what you learnt last week. Click on the link below and complete the activity sheet.

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/

English: In English, watch the short animated video 'Taking Flight'. We've been working on writing stories from different character's perspective, so you could retell this narrative from Tony's/Grandpa's point of view; describe one of the adventures in detail. Start with the line, "I was travelling in the Radio Flyer; when....." or continue the narrative and add your own adventure.

Guided Reading: We have attached a poem 'The Listeners' for you to read today. Identify words that you don't know the meaning of and use a thesaurus or Google to help you find the meanings.

We hope you have enjoyed looking at the first lesson on the Mayans; if you haven't had a go at it yet, scroll down to find the link.

Maths: today's Maths lesson is all about adding decimals which equal more than one. Remember to have a look at the BBC website too as they have lots of useful resources to help you.

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/

English: Why not try writing a character description today? From your favourite book or one we have read in class. Remember to use lots of interesting vocabulary including figurative language, fronted adverbials and, of course, adjectives!

There is a resource bank for you to download to give you some ideas as to how to set this out.

PHSE: We have attached the first in a series of lessons about what it means to be British. At the moment, it's fantastic to see everyone pulling together during this time and it's certainly something to be proud of.

Welcome back Year 5!

We hope you have had a lovely Easter break and done lots of fun things in this lovely weather. If you have a look below this post, I have added some activities for you to complete today.

Maths: I have attached the first lesson introducing you to percentages. This lesson explains the meaning of percent and begins explaining how to find it.

English: Creating tension and atmosphere. We have done quite a lot of work on this over the last few months and it's always good to practise your skills.

Creative Curriculum: Our topic this half term would have been the Mayans - one of our favourites! I have attached this week's Creative Curriculum work for you to complete explaining who the Mayans were.

We are so pleased to see everyone having a great Easter break!

Easter crafts- here are some ideas for you to try at home over Easter! Don't forget to email in your photos

2/4/20 - Dance yourself happy!

If you're anything like us, we find that dancing makes us feel so much better!  With being stuck inside, it's so important to keep moving and keeping making each other smile. We've been doing lots of happy/silly dances this week to send to our friends to make them smile!

If you have been doing any dancing yourselves, why not send in a video to our email and we can share our happy dances on the Y5 page?

You never know, Miss Ibinson or Miss Errington might just pop up with a video of our own!

(PS. Miss Errington doesn't know I've nominated her for this - oops!

- Miss Ibinson)

WB 31/3/20 - This week's work! Well done to all our lovely Year 5's who are working so hard at home.

Goodnight Mister Tom

Unfortunately, we didn't get to the end of this amazing book. I seem to have left it on the ultimate cliff hanger frownHowever, if you can get a copy of the book and finish it in your own, you definitely should! Or, here are some activities you can do linked to the parts of the book we have already read.

  • Write a setting description of Little Weirwold - think about including figurative language such as personification, metaphors and similes. Remember, it's a sweet little town in the middle of the countryside with farms and huge fields.
  • Write a contrasting description of London during the war. Think about the buildings that had been destroyed, the smoke that filled the air and the busy streets.
  • Draw Willie, Zach and Mister Tom with Sammy
  • Write a letter from Zach to Willie after Willie returns to London
  • Create a missing poster for Willie when Mister Tom hasn't heard from him
  • Write a diary entry from the point of view of Wille on the day of his birthday  party after he receives all of the gifts

Make sure you send in photos of anything you do at home so I can share it on our page!

Maths - converting fractions to decimals - After all that hard work on fractions, we now look at turning them into decimals. Have a look at these resources on converting and see how you get on. I've attached the Powerpoint to help you learn the method and some questions to have a go at too!
