Welcome to Year 2!
This year is going to be a year packed full of exciting activities and new learning. In our topics this year, we will learn Year 2 skills through fun creative curriculum topics such as Australia, Space, Toys and much more! In Year 2 we always try our best, respect one another and take pride in what we are doing. We learn through working hard, having fun and sometimes making mistakes too. I can't wait for the year ahead and all of exciting challenges we will face together!
Creative Curriculum and English
This half term Year 2L are really excited about our topic of 'Explorers' and our study of Simon Bartram's 'Man on the Moon' books in English. Some children are so engaged by the topic that they have created their own models and posters at home! The children have also completed fantastic research homework on Tim Peake and Miss Bell can't wait to see what else they come up with!
Anti Bullying Week 2019
This week, Year 2 spent time thinking about bullying and this year's Anti Bullying Week theme, change starts with us. As part of this, we learned about the different types of bullying and thought carefully about what we could do if we were being bullied ourselves or witnessed another person being bullied. We used role play to act out what we would do in a range of different scenarios.
Investigating Properties of Material
In Year 2 we have been looking at the different materials objects are made out of and the properties of those materials. We set up an investigation to test whether or not materials were magnetic or transparent and whether they would float, squash or stretch. Before we investigated, we made our own predictions. After that we thought carefully about our results and whether or not they were what we expected. We really enjoyed a practical science lesson!
Sharing our learning
On the last day of term our grown ups were invited into school so that we could share all that we have learned in our 'Here and There' topic about The United Kingdom and Australia. We sang a song for our adults, shared biscuits we baked for them, showed them some examples of our work and completed some crafts with them. Everyone had a lovely afternoon and Miss Bell and Miss Brown were super impressed with how much we could share with our grown ups.
Year Two made Anzac biscuits to share with our adults. We were sure to read the recipe carefully, weigh and measure the ingredients accurately and follow the instructions to ensure we had a successful bake! We really enjoyed baking but we enjoyed eating our biscuits with our adults even more!
In PSHE, we have been thinking about how worries can affect different people. We read a story called 'The Making of Milton' and talked about how Milton's worries stopped him from being able to enjoy himself. We designed and made Worry Monsters we can tell small worries too and talked about who we can talk to at school and at home if we have big worries.
In Year 2 we work very hard during our maths lessons and love to improve our maths learning practically. This week we have been practicing our addition and subtraction skills using practical resources to help us work out if numbers sentences are true or false. We have also been using the part-whole model to help use derive new number facts.
Kirkley Hall Visit
As part of our Creative Curriculum topic, Year 2 visited Kirkley Hall Zoological Gardens. We were lucky enough to see some Australian animals close up and learn more about their habitats and the way they live. It was a wet and windy day, but Miss Bell was very proud of the way we didn't let the weather dampen our spirits!
As part of our 'Here and There' topic we have been working on Australian and Aboriginal artwork. We looked carefully at how the Aboriginal people told stories through artwork and re-created our own stories using chalk. We have also been practicing our tinting skills in preparation for painting Uluru (a physical geography feature in Australia) at sunset.
Futsal Partnership Workshop
Year 2 were lucky enough to take part in a football workshop ran by the coaches from Futsal Partnership. During the workshop, we practiced our football skills, gained confidence when controlling the ball and took part in small games where we used the new skills we had learned. We loved the workshop and it certainly helped us to work up an appetite for lunch!
