MFL (French)

At Lingey House, the Modern Foreign Language we learn is French. French is an international language, spoken across five continents by more than 220 million people. As well as being the official language of our closest continental neighbour, French is the second most widely learned foreign language after English.

Children in every KS2 class learn French in a weekly, dedicated lesson, taught by a language specialist.

We have started to use a new Scheme of Work in French this year.  This DfE-approved scheme has been produced for Cam Trust schools by the very highly regarded MFL specialist Dr Rachel Hawkes, in collaboration with Dr Marie-Odile Guillou, a native French speaker who has many years experience of teaching the language.  The scheme is based on NCELP (National Centre for Excellence for Language Pedagogy) principles, which are research- and teacher-informed.

In 2016, the Teaching Schools Council commissioned the Modern Foreign Languages Pedagogy Review.  The review was chaired and authored by Ian Bauckham, CEO of the Tenax Schools Trust, a National Leader of Education, an OFSTED inspector and a Trustee of NFER.

The 2016 review established the principle that there were three strands of knowledge which were key to improve outcomes in languages in schools.  The Cam Trust scheme is based on these principles, using as its foundation the three strands (phonics, grammar, vocabulary), with systematic revisiting:

  1. Phonics – these are based on the most frequently occurring and most difficult sound-writing patterns

  2. Vocabulary – about 500 words are introduced by the scheme, 80% of which are in the top 2000 most frequently words used in French.  All words are introduced and thoroughly practised and then revisited systematically twice more

  3.  Grammar – this is built up incrementally and practiced thoroughly in listening and reading tasks (receptive language), before being expected to be used in speaking and writing (productive language)
