Forest School

What is Forest School?

  1. Schools originated in Scandinavia and have become more popular in the U.K. in recent years. School sessions are delivered weekly in a natural outdoor environment by School Leaders.
  2. School is an exciting, stimulating programme which enables children to experience and learn about nature in a safe environment throughout the changing seasons.

Through Forest School sessions children develop their self-esteem, confidence, physical abilities and communication skills. Literacy, maths, art, DT and ICT skills are also developed through activities, play and exploration.

The children are given opportunities to assess and manage risks with the Forest School leaders which develops their understanding of danger and problem-solving skills.

Our Forest School

We are in the process of developing our own Forest School site in our school grounds. The children, from Nursery to Year 6, will be involved in this development and will therefore adopt a sense of ownership and responsibility for the site. We are fortunate to have an Environmental Conservation expert to help us plan and develop our Forest School site to provide the children with a natural outdoor classroom where many adventures occur and wonderful memories are made. The corner of our site is ideal for our initial sessions and we may occasionally use Oliver Henderson Park. Our corner site has mature trees and plants established and is a haven for lots of birds and insects. It has a clearing which is a magical spot for exploring and discovering the natural world; den building; story telling; natural art; role play and many more activities.
