Welcome to Y2P
This week at Lingey House it is Outdoor Learning Week. Take a look at some of the fantastic things year 2P have been doing!
All of the year 2's went on a trip to Saltwell Park today. We had so much fun! We played with the leaves and made our own big art picture, we sketched the Japanese garden for our sketch books, played games in the park, went on a hunt for squirrels, fed the ducks, went on a picture hunt and even had time to get lost in the maze! We had such a busy day! Take a look at the photos-I'm sure you'll agree, it's easy to see everyone was having a great time!
Madame Moses set us a language challenge today! We searched the school for clues and cracked her code! Great team work Year 2!
We worked in pairs today to collect natural collage materials. We had a check list to try and collect and then back in the classroom we arranged our materials into our own design. Take a look at our final product!
This week in Year 2 it is Arts week. We will be doing lots of learning around the painting Mr and Mrs Andrews by Thomas Gainsborough. Come back soon to see some of the exciting things that we have been up to!
It is Arts week for year 2 this week and linked to the painting 'Mr and Mrs Andrews' that we have been learning about we decided to think a little bit more about the trees that Thomas Gainsborough had painted within his picture. We had a walk around school and collected leaves that we could find and used a classifying sheet to identify the type of tree that the leaves had come from. Back in the classroom we talked about leaves during different seasons and talked about the season that we thought the painting might have been created in. We then drew our leaves and identified some features such as height, colour, and width. Fantastic investigating again this week Year 2!
We have been learning about endangered animals during arts week and decided to link this to our maths lessons. We have been learning a brand new skill-statistics! It sounds tricky but we have been up for the challenge! After learning about endangered animals we decided that would like to sponsor one of these animals to try and help a good cause! We looked at the animals that we could sponsor and then make a class tally chart voting for an animal. Then we turned our tally charts into a pictogram and then answered questions about our data. Fantastic real life maths year 2! We decided that we would like to sponsor a dolphin-next we need to write a letter in our English lesson to ask Mrs Ritchie for some money to adopt our dolphin!
Today in our English lesson we answered comprehension questions linked to letters that we have ordered. We will be using these skills during the rest of the week when we will write our own letter to gloucestershire police. Fantastic reading skills Year 2!
We were all very excited for our science lesson this week in Y2P as we were designing and conducting our very first experiment! We are investigating the type of environment that worms like to live in. We made our own choice chamber with 4 different sections and decided to have dark wet soil, dark dry soil, light wet soil and light dry soil. Unfortunately it was raining extremely hard during our lesson so we couldn't get outside and collect our worms so Mr Jackson delivered them to us. We will look soon to see the results of our experiment and also to see who had a correct prediction!
Today we had a tasting session of the Australian Anzac biscuits that we made. We shared with our partner and talked about the biscuits taste, appearance, smell and the texture. We filled our whiteboard with adjectives to describe the biscuits and enjoyed sharing ideas with our friends. Maybe you can share this Australian recipe with someone at home and make your own Anzac biscuits! They were delicious!
Today we went outside to take our boomerangs for a test flight! Before we went outside we watched a video of a professional throwing his boomerang and listened to his top tips for throwing an Australian boomerang. We measured who's went the furthest and watched carefully to see if anyone could get their boomerang to return back into their hands like the professionals. Well Done Year 2 some of your designs were very effective!
Today we learned about a special biscuit from Australia called the Anzac biscuit. It was invented by the wives, girlfriends and mothers of soldiers going away to fight during World War 1. We talked about the special uses of the ingredients inside of the biscuits-lots of sugar for energy, and talked about ingredients that were not used-eggs because they have a short shelf life, are fragile and poultry farmers were fighting the war. We weighed the ingredients as a class and made our own biscuits.
We can’t wait to taste the Anzac biscuits!
Today we worked to create our own ideas modelled on 'Diary of a wombat'. We worked in groups and thought about activities that different animals can do and made notes about these ideas. Tomorrow we are going to create our own class writing based on one of these animals-we decided to write 'Diary of a baby tiger'. Come back to see our writing soon!
Today we read the story 'Diary of a wombat' I set you a challenge to up level the writing and use a dictionary to find some new and exciting words. You all worked really hard to think of words that you hadn’t used before and used your phonic skills to sound out unfamiliar words! Well Done!
I wonder if you can use any of these new words within your writing throughout the week!
We have been really excited for our DT lessons this half term! Last week we designed our own boomerang and this week we were all eager to create them using card. Some children used paper plates as a template to then create the outline and other children challenged themselves creating their own shape out of cardboard.
They look great Year 2! Some have 3 sides, some have 4 and some even have 8!!
Come back soon to see us fly our boomerangs!
We have built upon our learning of habitats from last week during our science lessons by learning about microhabitats. We thought about the different type of animals that we might find in these environemtns and then went out to explore our school environement! We used tally charts to identify the insects that we found and then back in the classroom we turned this data into our own chart!
Can you remember the things that we must remember while investigating microhabitats?
Today in our science lessons we have been thinking about animals and their habitats. We worked in teams and arranged the animals into groups. We talked about the reasons why we thought animals lived in different habitats and talked about the things that animals use from the environment.
