Mathematics

 

In line with the National Curriculum, we aim to develop mathematical skills in three fundamental areas: fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Teachers ensure that key facts are taught in engaging, motivating ways. Children will become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics through frequent and varied practice developing the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. A big focus is also given to developing reasoning skills across all areas of maths learning. Each child should be able to think and solve problems mathematically by using the appropriate skills, concepts and knowledge. Children are provided with rich and enjoyable experiences including opportunities to apply their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

 

National Curriculum

The expectation is that the majority of pupils will move through the programmes of study at broadly the same pace. However, decisions about when to progress should always be based on the security of pupils’ understanding and their readiness to progress to the next stage. Pupils who grasp concepts rapidly should be challenged through being offered rich and sophisticated problems before any acceleration through new content. Those who are not sufficiently fluent with earlier material should consolidate their understanding, including through additional practice, before moving on.

- Developing and applying calculation- addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
- Fractions (including decimals and percentages)
- Measurement
- Geometry
- Statistics
- Algebra
- Ratio and Proportion

 

Time tables

Teachers use a ‘Button Badge’ scheme to encourage children to learn their times tables facts. Children will be awarded colour coded badges for quick recall of times tables’ facts up to the twelfth term (x12).

Planning

For long term planning, all year groups follow the National Curriculum. Staff use White Rose as medium term plans from which short term plans are produced by the teacher. Mathematical links are encouraged in other subjects, where relevant, so children have the opportunity to rehearse and apply skills.
