Members of the Tyne & Wear Fire Service visited Lingey House on Tuesday 23rd February to give a fire safety talk to pupils from Y1 and from Y5 & Y6.

Pupils learnt about the job of a firefighter, about fire safety at home and at school and what to do should they ever discover a fire.

Pupils had the opportunity to dress as firefighters, to see a fire engine and to see photographs and dvd footage of the causes and effects of fires.

All staff and children from Lingey House would like to thank the fire fighters for visiting our school. We enjoyed the sessions and learnt some very important messages.

Next week is the start of the school Christmas celebrations, including the productions of Whoops a Daisy Angel and Silent Night. The children are practising hard and are learning songs and words so you can enjoy them experiencing the real meaning of Christmas. Some of our children are very young (as young as 3) and are easily distracted and upset. I would ask you where possible not to bring babies and young children to the concerts. It can be off putting for children when they are performing if babies are crying – which they often do of course. If you have no choice but to bring a baby/toddler can I ask that you take he/she out if they begin to cry. Please do not let toddlers run around during the concerts. This request is in response to many parents who have voiced concerns that they cannot hear or their child has been upset when this occurs.

I would like to update you on the money raised by staff, children and parents for James Cook Hospital. I received a phone call from the staff on Ward 26 (the rehabilitation ward for serious head injuries) to say they had bought 6 wheelchairs, a patient hoist, a Wii Fit and a treadmill with our money. They were overjoyed at your donation – only the second this year! I called in with my son to see the items being used and was touched to see the Lingey Cheque had pride of place on the wall. Once again I would like to say a very big thank you for your donations. Lingey House has certainly made a difference.

Her Majestty The Queen and Prince Charles joined the party as Lingey House celebrated its 50th birthday.

'The Big Green Garden Party' was a fabulous day that will long be remembered by all concerned and showed once more just why Lingey House is, "The Best School in the Universe!"

Mrs Banks (our lunchtime supervisor), who was a pupil at Lingey House in 1959 when the school opened and her granddaughter Daisy (now one of our Nursery children) officially opened the garden party.

Pupils and parents then enjoyed the many the stalls and sideshows, as well as being entertained by the school bands and choirs of Heworth Grange and Kingsmeadow.

Everyone enjoyed having a picnic lunch in glorious weather on the school field before a surprise visit from our special royal guests.

The Queen and Prince Charles addressed the gathered crowd and confirmed the view of Her Majesty's Inspectors that Lingey House is officially an 'outstanding' school.

Our guests were then treated to a musical and dance extravagansa as pupils from throughout the school 'Danced Through The Decades' from 2009 back to 1959.

Lingey House is an outstanding school. Pupils, staff and parents readily embrace the school’s motto ‘to aim high’ and this is evidenced most clearly in the excellent progress pupils make, the high standards they attain, and in the exceptional
curriculum and care, guidance and support provided.
[Ofsted May 2009]

Pupils talk enthusiastically and with confidence, about how
much they enjoy school, and how, ‘Lingey House is the best school in the universe’, and this can be seen in their very positive attitudes to learning and their exemplary behaviour.

Lingey House celebrates its 50th Birthday on the 30th June 2009.

As part of our week-long celebrations we are producing a ’50 Years of Lingey House DVD’ and putting up a large display of pupil memories in the school hall.

We are aware that many of our parents are former pupils of the school and are looking for any photographs, newspaper cuttings etc that people might have from their time at Lingey House.

Photographs will be scanned to be used for the DVD and then will be put up on display in the hall.

If you have anything that you think would be suitable for display please send it into school in an envelope with your child.

Remember to print your child’s name and class on the back of all photographs so that they can be returned to you after the birthday celebrations.

Lingey House is where we belong,
It's been 50 years and still going strong.
A happy family is what we are,
Living together and going far.

Aiming High is what we do,
Working hard everyday it's true.
Getting awards by the week,
And being the envy of all that compete.

People come from all around,
So let's all celebrate and make a happy sound.

On Saturday, March 28th, 2009 at 8.30pm, people around the world will turn off their lights for one hour, WWF’s Earth Hour, to show their support for global action on climate change. Recent predictions show that climate change could lead to 30% of the world’s species becoming extinct. It will also have major effects on the lifestyles and livelihoods of people living all around the world. We need a global deal to reduce emissions and keep global temperature rise below 2°C. 2009 is the year in which to get it right: Earth Hour is your chance to lend your voice.

Key landmarks including The Millennium Bridge, The Tyne Bridge, The Civic Centres, Greys Monument, The Baltic and Sage etc will switch off their lights plunging the quayside into darkness.

A new trophy cabinet is going to be needed at Lingey House after the school scooped two more prestigious awards at the Beautiful Gateshead Garden Competition.

First the school won 'Best School Project' for Lingey House Saves The Planet and then followed this up with an achievement award at the end of the night for 'Best Contribution in Gateshead to the Envrionment'.

This really is a phenomenal achievement for the school. The category is for the whole of Gateshead and has previously been won by large-scale conservation projects in the 17 years since its introduction in 1991. The award is recognition for the hard work of staff, pupils, parents and all members of the Lingey House family that have helped to completely transform the school grounds in recent years.

In addition to these two awards Lingey House also came 2nd in the 'Best School Grounds' category and were entered into the 'Unusual Container' category too.

Former pupil and 2007 'Gardener of the Year' Kurtis Greenup joined members of the current Gardening Club to proudly collect the awards from the Mayor of Gateshead, Councillor Maureen Chaplin.

Could I take this opportunity to apologise for the short notice given for the recent school photographs. We had received feedback from parents about the group photographs taken in the summer and decided to return to Tempest, our usual photographer. We were then only able to take a date that Tempest could give us. We have already had very positive feedback from the new style photographs.

Class and group photos were taken in school today.

Pupils will be given a proof to take home next week of their class photos and any other photos they were part of (sports teams, music groups etc).

Photographer Peter Frayne has taken this year's photos and we have tried something a little different with the photos which we hope you will like. Out has gone the uniformed rows and hands on knees. Instead the pupils had free choice as to their pose, position and any additional equipment which they wished to hold.

Pictures are priced at £15 each and you can purchase as many of each as you like.

In addition to the proof of the photo the full range of photos will be displayed on the plasma screen in the entrance hall for you to view.

Below is a picture in the style of the class and group photos featuring children from Nursery - Year 6. This picture will soon become the permanent image on our school website.

Click on the 'comments' button below to let us know what you think of the new style of photos.

The Lingey House website is undergoing a facelift at the moment with a new-look website hopefully going live in the next 2-3 weeks.

The website was first launched in November 2006 and since then many pupils, parents and friends of our school have visited the website for the latest news and events from Lingey House. Over 300 people have posted comments to the entries on the site and I felt the site was starting to look a little cluttered.

The address of the website will be exactly the same www.lingeyhouseprimary.org, but will have a lot more audio and video content than the current site.

Watch this space for our new-look site . . . COMING SOON!

I look forward to hopefully reading even more comments that you add.

Our topic this half term in YR and YR1 is Superheroes!

We have been enjoying learning all about comics and we have even been designing and labelling our own superheroes!! We are going to look at local heroes soon and we are lucky enough to have the police and fire service into visit us. If you know of any other local heroes that would be willing to come in to talk to us that would be great!

There are many, many wonderful books for sale, some of which are exclusively sold through Scholastic. Both parents and children can browse through the books before deciding on their purchase. Or maybe which book Santa might bring them. Each book that is sold at the book fair also raises money for the school to buy books with so every purchase is greatly appreciated. Your child will soon be receiving a letter with all of this information as well as a leaflet that shows a small selection of the books that will be on the fair.

I'm sure you've all noticed the fabulous improvements that have taken place to our school grounds throughout 2007. As a result we've entered the school in the Gateshead East In Bloom and Beautiful Gateshead garden competitions.

Mr Bailey Snr and the Lingey House Gardening Club have been working hard throughout the year planting, weeding, digging . . . and making Lingey House a colourful and welcoming place in which to come and work and learn.

Mrs Ritchie and the school council have overseen the opening of our new tyre park, outdoor classroom and the decked area at the back of our school. All of these have contributed greatly to the landscape of our school.

Members of our Gardening Club and teaching staff will attend the presentation evenings for both the Gateshead East and Beautiful Gateshead competitions.

Let's keep our fingers crossed. The efforts of all concerned deserve to be rewarded!

Gateshead East In Bloom
Wednesday 10th October 2007 - Gateshead Civic Centre (7pm - 9:30pm)
Lingey House entered in the 'Best School Grounds' category.

Beautiful Gateshead

Lingey House's new ICT suite and library was officially opened today and the new building has been named 'Aim i.land'. The name was suggested by Stephanie Palmer, Nicole Pearson and Leigh Phillips and will be known as i.land (Information Land) for short. The name combines our Aim High moto with the fact the new building has an island-like location and is a source of information. It seems a very appropriate name for a state-of-the-art 21st century building!

David Buffham from the Bank of England had the honour of cutting the ribbon and joined guests and our School Council in having a tour of the new facilities.

Our 20 children who visited London last week were the first to have lessons in the new ICT suite and have been working on a class assembly that will be presented to parents on Monday 15th October at 2:30pm.

Everyone was very impressed with i.land and can't wait to see the impact that it will have on all concerned with Lingey House.

The official opening of our new ICT suite and library will take place on Wednesday 19th September at 1:45pm.

Mr Buffham from the Bank of England will cut the ribbon and will 'name' our new building.

We would like to thank everyone again for their kind donations, without your help this project wouldn't have been possible.

Parents will be invited into school in the near future to take a look around the new building.

We are sure that the new ICT suite and library will prove to be excellent additions to the resources we already have in place at Lingey House.

Lingey invaded London as 20 of our children from Year 5 and 6 visited the capital for a special 2 day trip.

It was an early start for the pupils as we had to meet at the Central Station at 6:30am, but as the train sped off for London everyone was excited about the events that lay ahead.

From Kings Cross station we had a short walk to the hotel in Russel Square to drop off our bags and then it was on to an open-top bus to see the famous landmarks of London.

Next we boarded a boat at Tower Bridge and headed down the Thames to Westminster where we went for a ride on the London Eye.

Our busy day continued as we caught the Tube back to the hotel and changed into our posh clothes ready for a night in the West End. A meal at Pizza Hut was followed by a fabulous night at the theatre seeing Mary Poppins.

Having had such an eventful day we were all ready for a good night's sleep back at the hotel.

After a cooked breakfast at the hotel we caught the Tube to the National Gallery and then quickly bought some souvenirs in Trafalgar Square to take home for our friends and family.

Next we walked up Whitehall, passing Horseguards Parade and arrived at Downing Street.

Normally you can't go onto Downing Street, but Mr Brown had heard what a wonderful school Lingey House was and invited us up! We all had our pictures taken outside of Number 10 and Mr Bailey even managed to get himself on the news!

We left Downing Street and caught the Tube to the Bank of England where we got the chance to pick up a gold bar worth over £100,000!

When we got back to Kings Cross we had our pictures taken on Harry Potter's platform 9 3/4 and then just had time for tea at McDonald's before getting the train home again.

We were all really tired when we got home, but was worth it as we all have memories that will last us a lifetime.

The 20 children will be performing an assembly about their trip to London on Monday 15th October (same day as parents evening) at 2:30pm.

Photographs and DVDs of the visit will be available to buy on the day and in school afterwards.

Pupils throughout the school had great fun taking penalties against Mr Bailey dressed as a clown as part of our sponsored penalty shootout.

Mr Bailey looked even more ridiculous than usual as he pulled on a bright green wig, colourful trousers and huge clown shoes!

Pupils lined up to try and score a goal past the clown and raise money for school funds in the process.

So far over £1200 has been raised.

Could all remaining sponsor money please be sent into school before the end of term.

Anyone raising £16 or more will receive a free football!

Year 6 celebrated the world premiere of Lingey House - The Movie with a Hollywood style launch at the Tyneside Cinema on Thursday 12th July.

The pupils all dressed up in their finest clothes and travelled to and from the event in true style by limousine.

Parents, friends and fellow pupils were also in the audience as the movie was shown for the very first time.

Even the damp weather couldn't spoil the day, as everyone celebrated the launch of our blockbuster movie.

The limousine and minibus was kindly supplied by Gateshead Central Taxis (the official taxi company of Lingey House).

A further screening of the movie will be shown in school next Wednesday (18th July) a 9:30am and a DVD of the movie will also go on sale next week.

The Year 4 rugby squad did themselves proud with an excellent 2nd place finish at the Year 4 rugby tournament at the Dryden Centre.

Of the 5 games they played, they ran out winners in 4 of them and only narrowly lost the final game 3-2 against Oakfield.

Again it was not just on the pitch that Lingey House excelled though. All 10 pupils who attended were a credit to the school with their excellent behaviour and sporting attitude.

Rugby training is available to all children at Gateshead Fell Rugby Club on a Sunday morning.

A link will appear in the 'Friends of Our School' section of the website very shortly.

Our 4th annual Prize Day will take place on Friday 13th July.

The ceremony starts at 9:30am and will last for approximately an hour and a half. Tea and coffee will be served after the presentations.

This is a special day when Lingey House celebrates the achievements of our children. Prizes are awarded for sport, the arts and academic attainment and this year sees the addition of several new awards!

Our 2007 Sports Days took place and our pupils and parents all had a great time.

In the morning it was the turn of our younger children to compete in their teams in a number of different events and in the afternoon it was our Key Stage 2 pupils who lined-up in blue, red, green and yellow teams to do battle for the Lingey House Sports Day Cup.

All the competitors did themselves proud throughout the afternoon and this resulted in a nail-biting climax to the afternoon. It all came down to the final race and just a few points, but in the end it was our Red Team who came out victorious!

A big thank must go to all the parents and friends who came along to watch. The pupils all enjoyed the support of the large crowd and it inspired them to give their all in each and every race.

At a recent meeting of 'Gateshead ICT Coordinators' the Lingey House website received great praise for the speed at which pupils and parents have got involved and the number of comments that have been posted in such a short space of time.

Yet again, Lingey House is showing other schools how it is done!

A massive thank you to everyone who has contributed so far. Keep the comments coming!

As I've said before it really is 'your website' and we DO listen to what you have to say.

Many thanks for making our website such a huge success.

Performing Arts Day 2007

The rain was unable to dampen the spirits of parents and children alike as our 2007 Performing Arts Day took place on Friday 6th July.

Due to the weather, our stalls and performances had to be held indoor, but that didn't stop people digging deep in their pockets to buy from the stalls and to enjoy the entertainment on offer throughout the day.

The pupils all did themeselves proud with their performances and a special thank you must go to the numerous volunteers who gave up their time to help on the day.

As well as being a fun-filled day, over £1000 was raised for school funds.

Thank you to everyone!

On Thursday 5th July our Year 5 class performed the Jungle Book at Heworth Grange.

For the afternoon performance all the pupils from our school walked down to Heworth to see our Year 5 stars in action.

They were richly entertained by some fabulous singing, dancing and some wonderful costumes and special effects.

In the evening the performers had the opportunity to invite their friends and family along and again everyone commented on what a wonderful performance it was.

A big thank you to all the staff at Heworth who made the performance possible, but an especially big thank you to Mrs Wrightson and Mrs Martin for all of their efforts.

Our school football team were crowned champions on Thursday evening after a nail-biting climax to the season.

Despite dominating the first three games against St.Augustine's, Falla Park and Roman Road, they were all to end in 0-0 draws.

It was the final game against Oakifield that proved to be crucial. A brilliant 2-0 had Lingey in top spot, but we now had to sweat on the result of the final match of the night between Roman Road and St.Augustine's.

A draw was what we were looking for and each attempt on goal had our hearts in our mouths.

After what seemed like an eternity the referee blew the whistle with the scores still goalless and the Lingey celebrations began.

The success is richly deserved after what has been a truely memorable season.

The boys will be presented with their trophies at the presentation night on Thursday 12th July at the Tyneview Club, Pelaw (7:15pm start).

Well done boys, we are all proud of you!

Following requests from parents on our website we would would like your views with regards to the possibility of adding an online ordering facility to our website.

Whilst it remains an idea for the future at present I would certainly welcome the futures of parents as to whether they would be prepared to use an online facility to pay for school dinners, uniforms, educational visits etc.

We do listen to your views and if this is something that our parents want, we will make every effort to make it happen.

All children will take part in a sponsored penalty shootout on Friday 6th July during our Performing Arts Day celebrations.

Each child will take 5 penalties against Mr Bailey (who will be kitted out in fancy dress) and all money raised will go towards buying resources for our new ICT suite and library.

We hope that you will support your child in helping to collect sponsors, but we ask that children do not knock on the doors of strangers.

In reward for collecting sponsor money, any child who collects £16 or more will receive an Adidas leather football for their efforts.

Many thanks for supporting us in this worthwhile cause.

Mrs Stokes' class began the process of editing Lingey House The Movie today at CLC.

The pupils worked in groups to first of all storyboard the movie and then choose the parts of the footage that they wished to feature along with adding captions, credits etc.

The behaviour of our pupils was excellent and was commented upon by the staff at CLC.

Mrs Jackson's class will continue the process of editing the movie tomorrow.

Our photos show our Year 6 pupils hard at work.

I'm delighted with the response that we've had to our new website. In the 2 weeks since we went live we've had almost 50 comments posted on the site and new people are beginning to comment every day.

A big thank you to Ellie, Amy and Chelsea who have been our star contributors so far. Keep the comments coming girls and try to encourage more of your friends to visit our website too.

I've made some new additions to the site this morning that I would love people to comment on. Our Year 4 girls achieved a magnificent 3rd place in the Stars in Your Eyes Final and our new ICT Suite and Library was completed yesterday. Mrs Wrightson's picture now added to our 'Meet The Staff' section too.

Looking for comments from pupils to put on the website in our 'Meet The Staff' section. Entries now on for Mr Bailey and Pat (cleaner), but please click on the 'comment' button and make an entry for other staff members and I'll put the best ones on the site.

Looking also for a few lines about 'What Our Pupils Say' (about our school). Entries on from Year 2 and Year 4, but again looking for entries from other year groups.

Many exciting events to still look forward to in these final 5 weeks of term, so sure there is going to be plenty to commet on.

Keep ideas coming in for our I can improve the site.

The keys for our new ICT Suite and Library have been officially handed over to the school now and our School Council were on hand to mark the special occasion.

The pouring rain could do nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of our pupils who were keen to be the first to step foot into the new building.

In the next few weeks the furniture, computers, new books and resources will all be added and our Year 6 pupils will get the chance to see everything in place before they break-up.

The building will be fully up and running for the start of the new school year in September and we are sure it will prove to be an excellent addition to our school.

A massive thank you to all who contributed to our 'Buy A Brick' campaign. Your money will be well spent in buying exciting new resources for your children.

The Year 4 girls did themselves and the school proud by achieving an excellent 3rd place in the Stars in Your Eyes final. Rachel, Sophie, Caitlin and Kelsie performed 'Sound of the Underground' by Girls Aloud at Tyneview Primary School. The competition was tough as 7 others schools were also present and all acts performed to a very high standard. The girls were rewarded for their efforts by winning a day at the NE3 Group's recording studio to record their song.

Well done girls!

In the first match of the night a brace from Luke saw Lingey record a 2-0 win over Carr Hill.

In the second match Lingey went goal crazy, coming out 8-1 winners over Brandling. Hatricks from Jordan and Connor, were added to by goals from Luke and Shaun.

The final match of the night saw a 4-0 win over St.Albans. 2 more goals from Jordan, an own goal and a 4th of the night from Luke capped a truely memorable season.

We are pleased to announce that you can receive a 10% discount on holidays booked with Hays Travel.

Schools report that a major proportion of pupil absence is due to family holidays during term time and we all understand that this is because prices increase during the school holidays.

The scheme was launched last January and many families have already saved huge amounts off their holiday. However, more families could be using the saving to get away during school holidays. The scheme has now been extended to August 2008.
